Terrorist group Boko Haram attack military base in north-east Nigeria
Subscribe to ITN News: http://bit.ly/itnytsub Terrorists from the Islamic group Boko Haram have attacked an air base in north-eastern Nigeria. Authorities have released little detail about the attack and have not said if there were any casualties. A military spokesman only said that security forces had repelled attacks by "daring terrorists". The Nigerian government has since imposed an 24-hour curfew in the area, near Maiduguri. In May, President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Borno state, of which Maiduguri is the capital, and two neighbouring states that are also targeted by Boko Haram. He also declared an all-out offensive against the group, who are fighting to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria. Thousands of people have died since Boko Haram's insurgency began in 2009. The attacks took place in Waga Chakawa village in Adamawa state and in Kawuri village in Borno state. Reuters reports suspected insurgents set off bombs and fired into a congregation in a Catholic church in Waga Chakawa village. They then burned down houses and took residents hostage in an attack that lasted four hours, according to witnesses. At least 22 people were killed. In a separate attack, at least 40 people were killed in Kawuri village when explosives were detonated in a busy marketplace, according to the BBC. Assailants then set fire to homes and gunned down residents who tried to flee. A total of 62 people were killed in the attacks, according to Reuters, although some other media outlets reported as many as 100 people dead. Reports reports, "President Goodluck Jonathan is struggling to contain Boko Haram in remote rural regions in the country's northeast corner, where the sect launched an uprising in 2009. "Boko Haram, which wants to impose sharia law on a country split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims, has killed thousands over the past four and a half years and is considered the biggest security risk in Africa's top oil exporter and second largest economy after South Africa. "Its fighters' favourite targets have traditionally been security forces, politicians who oppose them and Christian minorities in the largely Muslim north." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation's News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for m- published: 26 Feb 2014

Suspected Islamists kill 90 in Nigeria village raid: witnesses For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to http://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Suspected Islamist fighters killed at least 90 people in an early morning attack on a village in remote northeast Nigeria on Sunday, witnesses said. The Boko Haram gunmen surrounded the village of Izge, near the border with Cameroon, spraying it with bullets, setting off explosions and burning down dozens of houses, they said. "As I am talking to you now, all the dead bodies of the victims are still lying in the streets," resident Abubakar Usman told Reuters by telephone. "We fled without burying them, fearing the terrorists were still lurking in the bushes." Borno state Police Commissioner Lawal Tanko confirmed the attack but said he had no details of casualties. Another witness, Lawan Madu, said hundreds of residents had fled. President Goodluck Jonathan ordered extra troops into northeast Nigeria in May to try to crush the insurgents, who want to carve a breakaway Islamic state out of largely Muslim northern Nigeria, where they have killed thousands of people. But the Islamists simply retreated into the remote, hilly Gwoza area bordering Cameroon, from where they have continued to mount deadly attacks that increasingly target civilians. Jonathan faces an election in a year's time, and the persistence of Boko Haram's 4-1/2-year-old insurgency despite an costly military operation against it remains a major headache. Last week, Boko Haram fighters in trucks painted in military colors killed 51 people in an attack on the Konduga local government area. Nigeria's Boko Haram crisis Bama attack mars victory claims - 19 February 2014
There are reports of a "massive" attack in northern Nigerian border town of Bama, a day after a presidential spokesman said the army was "winning the war" against Islamist militants. Borno state senator Ahmed Zanna told the BBC the attack on Bama had lasted for five hours on Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, spokesman Doyin Okupe said the military was "on top of the situation". More than 245 people have been killed this year alone by suspected Islamists. Several thousand have lost their lives since Boko Haram began its uprising in 2009. Mr Okupe's statement contradicted the comments of the governor of Borno state, where Boko Haram was founded. Governor Kashim Shettima called for reinforcements and said the insurgents were "better armed and better motivated" than the security forces. Details of what happened in Bama are still sketchy but residents have also contacted the BBC Hausa service to report the attack. The town has been attacked several times in the past. A state of emergency was declared in Borno and two neighbouring states last year, with thousands of extra troops sent to the region, but the attacks have continued. The BBC's Wills Ross in Nigeria says the army has at times taken hours to respond to attacks, allowing the militants to kill, destroy homes, schools and mosques, and loot before retreating. On Saturday, 106 people were killed in an attack on the village of Izghe. After meeting President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr Shettima told the BBC Hausa service that without reinforcements "it is absolutely impossible for us to defeat Boko Haram". But this was denied by Mr Okupe, who said Nigeria's army was one of the best equipped in Africa. "We state authoritatively without any fear or equivocation whatsoever that Nigeria is already winning the war against terror and the activities of the insurgents will be terminated within the shortest possible time." September 30 2013 40+ Nigerian Students Fatally Shot while Sleeping
September 30 2013 Sunday 40+ Nigerian Students Fatally Shot while Sleeping Islamic terrorists kill at least 40 students in attack on Nigerian college Thursday, police said suspected Islamic militants killed a pastor, his son and a village head and torched their Christian church in Dorawa, about 100 kilometers from Damaturu. They said the gunmen used explosives to set fire to the church and five homes. Islamic terrorists dressed in Nigerian military uniforms assaulted a college inside the country Sunday, gunning down dozens of students as they slept in their dorms and shot others trying to flee, witnesses say. "They started gathering students into groups outside, then they opened fire and killed one group and then moved onto the next group and killed them. It was so terrible," one surviving student, who would only give his first name of Idris, told Reuters. The siege began at about 1 a.m. in rural Gujba. "They attacked our students while they were sleeping in their hostels, they opened fire at them," Provost Molima Idi Mato of Yobe State College of Agriculture, told The Associated Press. The extremists also torched classrooms. Nigeria State Police Commissioner Sanusi Rufai told Reuters that he suspected that the terrorist group Boko Haram was behind the attack, but declined to elaborate. Idi Mato said he could not give an exact death toll as security forces still are recovering bodies of students mostly aged between 18 and 22, but he said as many as 50 may have been killed. The Nigerian military has already collected 42 bodies and transported 18 wounded students to Damaturu Specialist Hospital, 25 miles north, said a military intelligence official, who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press. Two of the wounded later died, said Adamu Usman, a survivor from Gujba who was helping at the hospital. The extremists rode into the college in two double-cabin pickup all-terrain vehicles and on motorcycles, some dressed in Nigerian military camouflage uniforms, a surviving student, Ibrahim Mohammed, told the AP. He said they appeared to know the layout of the college, attacking the four male hostels but avoiding the one hostel reserved for women. "We ran into the bush, nobody is left in the school now," Mohammed said. Almost all those killed were Muslims, as is the college's student body, Usman said. Wailing relatives gathered outside the hospital morgue, where rescue workers laid out bloody bodies in an orderly row on the lawn for family members to identify their loved ones. One body had its fists clenched to the chest in a protective gesture. Another had hands clasped under the chin, as if in prayer. A third had arms raised in surrender. Provost Idi Mato confirmed the school's other 1,000 enrolled students have fled the college. He said there were no security forces stationed at the college despite government assurances that they would be deployed. The state commissioner for education, Mohammmed Lamin, called a news conference two weeks ago urging all schools to reopen and promising protection from soldiers and police. Boko Haram is aiming to establish an Islamic state in northern Nigeria and has intensified attacks on civilians in revenge for a Nigerian military offensive against the group, Reuters reports. Most schools in the area closed after militants on July 6 killed 29 pupils and a teacher, burning some alive in their hostels, at Mamudo outside Damaturu. Northeastern Nigeria is under a military state of emergency to battle an Islamic uprising prosecuted by Boko Haram militants who have killed more than 1,700 people since 2010 in their quest to install an Islamic state, though half the country's 160 million citizens are Christian. Boko Haram means Western education is forbidden in the local Hausa language. United States President Barack Obama on Tuesday described the group as one of the most vicious terrorist organizations in the world, speaking at a meeting with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan at which both reaffirmed their commitment to fight terrorism. Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau last week published a video to prove he is alive and prove false military claims that they might have killed him in an ongoing crackdown. Government and security officials claim they are winning their war on terror in the northeast but Sunday's attack and others belie those assurances. The Islamic extremists have killed at least 30 other civilians in the past week. The Associated Press contributed to this report. read more http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/09/29/college-provost-says-suspected-islamic-extremists-kill-about-50-students-in/- published: 01 Oct 2013
